Staying in contact with former stepfamily

From an advice column focused on divorce: "My wife and I are going through a divorce after 18 years of marriage. We didn't have children; however, she has children and grandchildren from a previous marriage...would it be OK to send [birthday/holiday] cards to her children or grandchildren?"
